ABOUT TWIN CITIES
LATINX & HISPANIC CITYSCAPES

Welcome to "Latinx & Hispanic Cityscapes" (LHC), an online repository dedicated to showcasing public art created by Latinx and Hispanic artists in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. This collection features a series of murals that reflect the cultural richness and diverse stories of the Latinx and Hispanic community in our region. Additionally, this digital repository is the result of collaboration between the students of the class SPAN 3105W: "Introduction to Hispanic Literature and Culture," and Professor Elvira Aballí Morell from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

As part of the class, students were tasked with locating and analyzing a mural by a Latino or Hispanic artist in the Twin Cities. Each mural (in situ) includes a QR code that links to our archive. The goals of this project were:

  1. To Foster Cultural Awareness: The repository serves as a platform to increase visibility of Latinx and Hispanic  artists and the cultural contributions they make to our community.

  2. To Enrich the Educational Experience: Students applied classroom concepts to real-world contexts, developing accessible analyses while avoiding overly academic jargon.

  3. To Engage with the Community: By linking QR codes directly at the mural sites, we aim to connect the public with deeper narratives behind the artwork.

Feel free to explore our map of murals, read student analyses, and learn more about the vibrant Latinx and Hispanic cultural cityscape in the Twin Cities.
